From my notebooks: The Adventure of Living

by Paul Tournier

Speaking of parents who are anxious to insure their children’s success: “It is precisely because they are so anxious that they jump on their children’s slightest mistakes…anxiety engenders fear; fear paralyzes, breaks the spirit, takes away joy, deadens life, and engenders self-centeredness, absorbing the mind and turning it away from adventure…” “Albert Einstein was expelled from the Munich school at the age of fifteen, because he showed no interest in his studies…”

Young people who call everything into question often “strike me as being much more human than their parents, precisely because they are no longer content to live without thinking, to do everything unintelligently like everyone else without knowing why, to live to work, and to work to live…”
